Secret #2—Ask the Right Questions

  • 1) Has the car ever been in an accident?

This is very important because a car that has will
often be more problematic than one that hasn’t. If the answer is yes, avoid it.
  • 2) How many miles are on it?

This is important, when you’re buying a cheap car. Most will have at least 100,000 miles though you will occasionally find a great deal on a car with many less. One of my Subaru Wagons had just 70,000 miles on it when I bought it for $1250 cash. I consider buying a car if it has less than about 120,000 miles. These cars are known to go to 180,000-200,000.

  • 3) Are you the original owner?

You wouldn’t think this would matter but does it ever. Usually a person making car payments takes good care of the car at least for the first five years. Changes the oil. Has regular maintenance. Then once it’s paid off, owners sometimes slack off a bit.

Try to stick with cars that have just one owner. If it has more than one, find out why. It could indicate a problematic car.
